Getting Started On YouTube – The Basics

For many people, starting a YouTube channel may be a daunting task. With so many people posting videos on the platform, the very thought of creating a video may be scary. But fear not, because today we’re going to go over the basics of YouTube!


The first piece of advice I can give about starting a YouTube channel would be making sure you know what kind of content you want to create. Essentially, you need to find your video category.  When people Subscribe to a YouTube channel, they usually do so because of the creator’s content. When people know what they’re subscribing to, they’re most likely going to come back to watch more.

If your channel’s content is all over the map, people won’t be sure exactly what kind of content you’re providing, and therefore, may not find a reason to Subscribe.

YouTube content categories also help people see your videos easier. When uploading a video, you can choose the category that your video best represents, making sure the right people find your video.


YouTube has become an internet video-viewing powerhouse. Many large corporations have YouTube channels and will record their videos with cinema-quality equipment– and it shows!


While it isn’t practical to go out and buy a $15,000 cinema camera for recording your YouTube videos, it is important to keep quality in mind.

One of the first things I tell people who ask me “How can I make my YouTube videos better?” is to invest in better equipment. Instead of recording your latest video on a webcam, maybe you could go out and buy one of Canon’s entry-level Rebel DSLR cameras. Most models are capable of recording in full 1080p HD video, and that’s really all you need! It’s definitely a step-up in quality, and your audience will surely appreciate more professional-looking visuals.

YouTube supports videos up to 8K UHD (7680 × 4320) in quality, but 1080p HD (1920×1080) is most common in videos. I recommend this camera for beginners (1080p 30fps video recording)

and this one for intermediate users and professionals alike (4K 30fps video recording).


Audio is another super important part of the overall quality of your YouTube videos.

Again, you don’t need a super expensive microphone to have great videos, but an entry-level microphone or lavalier mic can be a huge upgrade from starting with no extra audio equipment.

If your camera supports it, on-camera microphones, like this one, are a great starting choice.

For someone who needs to be more portable, a lavalier mic, which can be attached to a collar or shirt on a person, is a great option too.


Editing your YouTube videos is as important as the video itself. Video editing can help get your point across, sell a product, or tell a story you’re passionate about. Really, video editing opens even more possibilities to the already endless amount of possibilities as to what you can create.

Video editing can help you improve your content visually, and can also make exporting a video to YouTube that much easier. Even entry-level video editors, such as iMovie, give you options for exporting videos, like resolution control, and overall quality levels.

Here’s what I would recommend for editing software:

Beginners: iMovie (Mac), or Windows Movie Maker (Windows)

Intermediate: TechSmith’s Camtasia 2018 (Windows and Mac)

Expert: Adobe Premiere CC (Windows and Mac), Final Cut Pro (Mac)
